God Knows We Suffer

June 6, 2008

“If I were in charge, things would be different around here!”  If we haven’t heard it or said it, we have probably thought it.  We really think we know what is best for us, best for others, and best for the world.  We figure that it is pretty safe that in a world like ours there should be no suffering – at least not for the “good” people.  At least not for US!

What makes us think we know best?

God tells us that some humility is called for here, that in fact HE knows best. He says, through His apostle, Peter, in our text for today, 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

He gives similar guidance through Paul, Romans 8:28, 28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Again this calls for humility, recognition that the Lord is God and that we are His.  This is a humility that rises from faith, from trust that God is also good to us in Christ Jesus.

The opposite of this humility is pride and arrogance.  It is pride like that shown by the children of Israel as they rebelled against Moses because they didn’t like the hardship they faced after escaping Egypt.  It is pride that is rooted in a lack of faith, a lack of trust in God’s goodness and God’s power.

Where this humility prevails, however, there is peace and rest.  We are invited, 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. And he DOES care for you.  Whatever your suffering may be, it is in the whole scale of things only “a little while.”  After that is the eternal dawn, confirmed by the resurrection of God the Son Himself.

So may we patiently wait for Him!

The Christian as "Victim"

In Chapter 3 of his first letter, John writes about the likelihood that as a Christian you will be hated by the world.  He introduces the subject this way, “11?This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. ?12?Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. ?13?Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you.”

Just as Cain murdered Abel because evil opposes righteousness, so it has always been.  So it shouldn’t surprise us (to pick a current example) that those who maintain that marriage is a lifelong union between one man and one woman, and the only proper situation for sexual expression are hated.  For a public figure to call homosexuality immoral is to be pilloried in the press as a bigot and a homophobe (whatever that is)!

This is just the newest in a series of issues going back to “no-fault” divorce, sex outside of marriage, abortion, and so on.  Like something completely topsy-turvy it is those who subscribe to basic morality who are put on the defensive – even hated.

While anyone can promote morality without being Christian, Christians do take a different approach.  For one thing, we realize that righteousness doesn’t consist just of outward marital fidelity, but in perfect love toward God and our neighbor.  So in our witnessing we speak as one sinner to another, not as the righteous to the unrighteous.  Our love shows not in seeking to achieve righteousness, but in living out the righteousness of Christ, which has been given to us by faith.

This irritates people even more, because in the scale of perfection all are found wanting, and apart from faith are insulted by the offer of a righteousness that is not our own.  Even in showing love, then, the Christian invites hatred.

But that does not make us victims as we commonly hear about today.  “Victimology” is the idea that it is OK to hate someone because of “what they have done to us!”  It is such a common response to perceived hurts that it is blatantly exploited by agitators and politicians.  Whatever happens, blame somebody!  Sue somebody!  Hate somebody!

Jesus who prayed for those who crucified Him calls upon us to respond differently.  He says,  ?Matthew 5:43? You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighborand hate your enemy.’ ?44? But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, ?45? that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. … He calls upon us to respond in grace, in undeserved love.  And that powerful message is just the thing to make an enemy into a brother or sister in faith.

FINDING "FAMILY"
Peter was writing to the church on the brink of persecution, when being known as a Christian could be costly or even fatal. Christians nevertheless learned how to find one another. One thing making it difficult must have been the fact that with believers coming from every stratum of society, the only thing they held in common was their faith.
One method of identifying one another was through symbols that only Christians identified. One example is the Cirencester Word Square.

“One of the earliest textual evidences for the presence of Christianity in Britain is a graffito found scratched into the wall-painting of a Roman house uncovered at Cirencester in 1818. The inscription is a word square in Latin consisting of the words ROTAS, OPERA, TENET, AREPO, SATOR, arranged as depicted below, and usually translated as:

"Arepo the sower, holds the wheels with care."

Cirencester Word Square
“At first glance, this phrase is seemingly meaningless. However, scholars soon realised that the letters could be rearranged into a cruciform pattern formed from the words PATER NOSTER or ‘our father’, with two each of the letters A and O left over, which in Greek are alpha and omega. These are both undoubtedly of powerful Christian symbolism, proving that the Cirencester word-square is an early Christian cryptogram, whose secret meaning was known only amongst those professing the Christian faith. The same word square has been found twice at Dura Europos on the River Euphrates in Mesopotamia where it has been dated to the year AD256, also twice at Pompeii in Campania which must have existed prior to the eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. The Cirencester word square cannot be dated with great certainty, but estimates range from the early-second century to the late-third, making it one of the earliest evidences of Christian worship in Britain.”[1]
In this season leading up to Pentecost, we reflect on the love that comes to us from the Holy Spirit in Word and Sacrament, and how this love is reflected to one another. Even if we have nothing else in common – language, color, education, wealth, nationality, culture – we have a common faith in Jesus our Savior.
