The Divine Service – Hymnary, p. 60:1-3

The Service of Preparation came into the historic liturgy of the church during the reformation. During the middle ages, the salutary use of private confession and absolution was abused into the “sacrament” of penance[1]. The reformers kept the practice of private confession and absolution as preparation for communion. It wasn’t until later that Lutherans incorporated confession and absolution into the service itself.

Jesus desires that we confess our sins, teaching us to pray, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgiven those who trespass against us", and He assures us through His apostle John, (1 John 1:9) 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Jesus also desires that we hear His own words of forgiveness coming from through His own representatives. He promises that when we hear our pastor forgive us on the basis of our confession, He does so at Christ’s own command. (John 20:21-23) Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; ….”

We therefore may be assured that we come before the Lord as His own dear beloved children. We have His love and approval because we have Christ’s own righteousness, and are “…found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. (Philippians 3:9)

Next week: More on the preparation.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came from the Father and became flesh among us in order to rescue us, His sheep. He laid down His life for us and took it up again in order to give us eternal life. By the preaching of His Gospel, He calls His sheep to Himself and keeps them with Him forever. As they hear His voice and follow Him, “they will never perish” (John 10:28), for “no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand” (John 10:29). In the same way, faithful pastors (literally, “shepherds”) “care for the church of God, which He obtained with His own blood” (Acts 20:28), “testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21). Therefore, with all the company of heaven, the Good Shepherd gathers his flock in worship, as they cry: “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” (Rev. 7:10).

MANKATO, MINNESOTA— A local pastor, together with officials of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS), a church body based in Mankato, noted with concern and disappointment the decision of the national convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), held in Minneapolis August 17-23, to allow the ordination of practicing homosexuals and lesbians as pastors of the church.

The smaller ELS is not affiliated with the larger ELCA, even though the names of the two churches are very similar. The confusion of the names has led a number of local congregations to make the differences between the two church bodies very clear. “We take God’s word very seriously,” said Pastor Edward Bryant, of St. Timothy Lutheran Church (ELS) in Lombard. “We don’t set it aside in order to accommodate practices that the Bible clearly teaches to be wrong.”

ELS President, Rev. John A. Moldstad, said: “Ordaining practicing homosexuals and lesbians to the ministry is a serious departure from the Biblical standards of morality to which Lutherans and Lutheran pastors have historically been held.” Moldstad clarified that, in contrast to the newly-adopted position of the ELCA, the position of the ELS on the matter of homosexuality and marriage is as follows:

We confess that Scripture condemns homosexuality and extra-marital relations (fornication and adultery) as sin. Nevertheless, when an individual caught up in such sins truly repents, the forgiveness of the Gospel is to be fully applied. We confess that the divine institution of marriage is to be heterosexual, in which, according to God’s design, a man and a woman may enjoy a life-long companionship in mutual love. We teach on the basis of Holy Scripture that marriage is the only proper context for the expression of sexual intimacy and for the procreation of children. See Rom. 1:26-27, 1 Cor. 6:9, 18 and 7:2-9, John 4:17-18, 1 John 1:9, Gen. 1:27-28 and 2:18-24, Matt. 19:4-6. (From We Believe, Teach, and Confess, adopted by the ELS in 1992)

Moldstad explained that ELS churches welcome into their midst those who may struggle with temptation toward a same-sex attraction, but who know in their conscience that this is wrong, and who seek God’s help in their struggle. Said Moldstad, “The ELS believes that in this world it is the duty of the church – as the body of Christ – to be a community of healing and reconciliation in the Gospel, and a beacon of hope to all humanity. And so, while the church is indeed called by the Lord to condemn as sin that which God condemns as sin, it is the church’s privilege also to offer and apply the grace, forgiveness, and acceptance of God, in Jesus Christ, to all who repent of their sins – whatever those sins may be.”

In addition to the similarity in names, the ELS shares a common heritage with some segments of the ELCA. The Mankato-based group was organized in 1918 by pastors and congregations that had declined to enter a merger that formed one of the predecessor bodies of the ELCA. The ELS has not participated in subsequent Lutheran mergers either – including the one that formed the ELCA in 1988 – because of what it saw as doctrinal compromises that these mergers represented.

President Moldstad may be contacted at the synod office in Mankato, by telephone (507-344-7354) or by email (elsynod@blc.edu). The synod’s web site is evangelicallutheransynod.org. Pastor Bryant may be contacted at St. Timothy Lutheran church (630-627-2435).

When I fill out wedding licenses I come to the part where I list the official title under which I solemnized the marriage. There I enter “Minister of the Gospel.”

What is the significance of that title, really? It means that your pastor is to serve the gospel, the “good news of salvation by God’s grace through faith in Christ Jesus.” He is to serve it by being faithful to it, proclaiming it faithfully and truly. That implies certain important truths.

First, it is all about Christ. The good news is never about what we do, but about what Christ has done. He saved you by becoming human like you, living under the law like you, living righteously as you should have done, and by dying for your sins in your place.

Second, it is the good news that is the focus of our preaching. The preaching that we are sinners and doomed to hell is a part of it, for if there is no danger, there is nothing from which we are saved. But the preaching about sin is not the main thing; it would lead only to despair if it were all we heard. The good news isn’t that God no longer hates sin, but that His justice was carried out upon Christ in our place.

Third, it is the most important thing for any of us. A pastor should so recognize the importance of the gospel to save that he treats it with absolute respect. Those who hear should say, along with Jesus’ disciples when they heard the gospel, “You have the words of eternal life.”

May we ever treasure the Ministry of the Gospel, by which God gives life, eternal life, to mankind.
