When he preaches repentance, John the Baptist points us to Christ Jesus. John was sent by God “as a witness, to bear witness about the Light, that all might believe through him” (John 1:7). He baptizes with water in order to “make straight the way of the Lord,” who shall redeem His people from their sins (John 1:23). That Lord Jesus “who comes after” John now stands among us and makes Himself known to us (John 1:26–27). He has been anointed by the Holy Spirit “to bring good news to the poor” and “to bind up the brokenhearted” (Is. 61:1).

By the washing of the water with His Word and Spirit, He clothes His Church with “the garments of salvation” and adorns her with His own righteousness “as a bride adorns herself with her jewels” (Is. 61:10). Therefore, we “rejoice always” in the Lord, “pray without ceasing,” and “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thess. 5:16–18). For “the God of peace,” who has called you by the Gospel, will surely “sanctify you completely,” so that “your whole spirit and soul and body” will “be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thess. 5:23–24).

“The Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1) begins when John the Baptist appears and comes “proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (Mark 1:4). As the Prophet Isaiah had written, John is the messenger of the Lord, sent before His face to prepare His way. To this day, the ministry of the Forerunner continues in the preaching of the Law and the Gospel, and in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. By these ways and means “the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Is. 40:5), and the Good Shepherd “will gather the lambs in His arms” (Is. 40:11). He speaks “tenderly to Jerusalem,” and He comforts His people by pardoning their iniquity (Is. 40:1–2). What is more, He promises “new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (2 Pet. 3:13). Repent, therefore, and humble yourself as you wait for His coming in peace (2 Pet. 3:14), because He “is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Pet. 3:9).

The Divine Service – Hymnary, p. 60:1-3

The Service of Preparation came into the historic liturgy of the church during the reformation. During the middle ages, the salutary use of private confession and absolution was abused into the “sacrament” of penance[1]. The reformers kept the practice of private confession and absolution as preparation for communion. It wasn’t until later that Lutherans incorporated confession and absolution into the service itself.

Jesus desires that we confess our sins, teaching us to pray, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgiven those who trespass against us", and He assures us through His apostle John, (1 John 1:9) 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Jesus also desires that we hear His own words of forgiveness coming from through His own representatives. He promises that when we hear our pastor forgive us on the basis of our confession, He does so at Christ’s own command. (John 20:21-23) Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; ….”

We therefore may be assured that we come before the Lord as His own dear beloved children. We have His love and approval because we have Christ’s own righteousness, and are “…found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. (Philippians 3:9)

Next week: More on the preparation.

When Isaiah beheld the glory of the Holy Triune God in the Temple, he confessed that he was lost because he was sinful and unclean. If even the holy angels cover their faces in the presence of “the King, the Lord of hosts,” then how could Isaiah stand before Him? (Is. 6:1–5).

The glory of the Lord, however, was manifested precisely in His forgiving of Isaiah’s sins. He touched Isaiah’s mouth with a burning coal from the altar of incense, and sanctified his lips for the proclamation of His Word (Is. 6:6–9).

Similarly, when Simon Peter witnessed the glory of God in the miraculous catch of fish, he was brought to his knees and confessed, “I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). Yet, the Lord Jesus did not depart from him, but calmed his fear and raised him up with His gracious forgiveness (Luke 5:10).

With this same forgiveness and love, Christ gathers people from every nation into His Church and pours out His Spirit upon them, first with the gift of saving faith and then all other spiritual gifts. The gifts of that same Spirit are manifested in the speaking and hearing of the Gospel for the building up of the Church (1 Cor. 14:12).

In order to understand the Bible it is crucial to know the differences between the two main teachings of the Bible, Law and Gospel.

The law is the message that all sin condemns us before God absolutely. So Paul quotes Deuteronomy, Galatians 3:10, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” The Psalmists also lay out the futility of trusting in our own righteousness. Consider Psalm 130:3, “If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?” and Psalm 5:5, “The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong.”

The law leaves no room for sin or sinners.

The Gospel, on the other hand is the good news of what God has done through our Savior Jesus Christ to meet the demands of the law on our behalf. John tells us, 1 John 2:2, “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” Paul tells us, Romans 4:25, “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.”

Those who trust in their own righteousness need to hear the law, so that they understand that they stand condemned before God and despair of their own righteousness.

Those who despair of their own righteousness must be pointed to Christ, who is our atoning sacrifice, and has taken away the sins of the world.

So Jesus preaches the law to the Pharisees who were really “pretty good” guys, and preaches the gospel to for tax collector, the corrupt and thieving public official. The former were taught to despair of themselves. Those in despair are taught to trust in Christ.

Are you facing the fact that your sins condemn you before God? Then let me assure you with the words of gospel truth: For the sake of Christ, all your sins are forgiven.
