Advent Services

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

The word “advent” means “coming.”  We celebrate the season by getting ready for Christ to come for us.  That makes Advent a penitential season, for we prepare for the coming of our Lord by repenting of our sins and receiving His gifts of grace and forgiveness in Christ.

During Advent we have many opportunities for worship.

The Lord Jesus Comes in Humility to Redeem Us

The Season of Advent focuses on the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and this first Sunday establishes this theme for the rest of the season. The Son of God came long ago to be our Savior, “a righteous Branch,” descended from David (Jer. 33:15). As He [...]

Day of Wrath

Friday, November 13th, 2009

DIES IRAE, DIES ILLA!  is the Latin title of Hymn #537, “Day of Wrath, O Day of Mourning!” (the chief hymn for this Sunday).  The opening lines are taken from Zephaniah 1:15 (Latin version of the Bible, translated): “That day is [or: will be] a day of wrath, a day of tribulation and distress …”

The Festival of All Saints

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

The observance of All Saints Day Began in the 360’s in the Syrian church with a festival that remembered all the martyrs.  With the persecutions ending in the church, it became easy to forget what the martyrs gave up for their faith, easy to forget what our faith is worth.

In 610 the great pantheon in [...]

A Powerful Reformation

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Today we remember the reformation of the church under Martin Luther.  On October 31, 1517, Luther posted 95 statements for debate on the church door in Wittenberg.  Within weeks the document was distributed throughout Europe.  In that document Luther questioned the teaching that forgiveness of sins came only through the Pope based upon one’s own [...]

Spiritual Feelings or True Words?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Are you “spiritual?
If you are struggling to figure out what that means, then you get the point I am trying to make.  “Spiritual” is way too vague to really have meaning.  The guy who stands on the mountaintop watching the sunrise calls it a “spiritual experience.”  The person who says of the recently dead (of [...]

What is Religion About?

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

When I ask people what religion is about I usually get one of two answers.  1) It’s about morality, about being good, about prohibiting bad behavior.  Some say it is repression. 2)  It’s about social service, helping the poor, and achieving justice.
By contrast, consider what the Bible says in John 3:17 “For God did not [...]

What About Angels?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Today we celebrate Michaelmas, the day of Michael and all Angels.  As with all of the “special festivals” this provides an opportunity to learn and reflect upon teachings of Scripture that might not otherwise be covered directly.  Michael is the only archangel mentioned by name in Scripture, and so he is taken as representative of [...]
