Our Lord Jesus Christ, True God in the Flesh, Cleanses Our Consciences from Sin

As He promised, the Lord our God has raised up “a Prophet” like Moses, namely Jesus, our brother in the flesh. “To Him you shall listen,” because the Word of the Lord is “in His mouth” (Deut 18:15–18). Indeed, He is more than a prophet and more than a scribe of the Scriptures; He is the incarnate Word, and He speaks “a new teaching with authority” (Mark 1:22, 27). He enters “the synagogue” of His Church and provides true Sabbath rest, using His authority to silence and cast out “even the unclean spirits” (Mark 1:21–27).

By His Word of the Cross He removes the accusations of the law and of the devil, and He cleanses our consciences before God the Father, “from whom are all things and for whom we exist.” Hence, we are now set free from bondage and commended to God by the one Lord, Jesus Christ, “through whom are all things and through whom we exist” (1 Cor. 8:6). Therefore, use your freedom to care for your brothers and sisters, neither causing them to stumble nor wounding their consciences (1 Cor 8:9–12), but cleansing and strengthening them with the Gospel.

The Lord Calls Us to Himself by the Preaching of Repentance in His Name
When “the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time,” sending him to preach judgment against the great city of Nineveh, “Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord” (Jonah 3:3). By this preaching, the people were brought to repentance. Because they “believed God,” as He spoke to them through His prophet, “they turned from their evil way” and were spared “the disaster that He had said He would do to them” (Jonah 3:5, 10).

St. Paul also warns that “the appointed time has grown very short” (1 Cor. 7:29). Therefore, while we live in this world and deal with it, we are not to cling to it, nor put our trust in it, for “the present form of this world is passing away” (1 Cor. 7:31). Rather, give “your undivided devotion to the Lord” (1 Cor. 7:35). When our Lord Jesus Christ comes and is proclaimed in the Gospel, “the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand” (Mark 1:14–15). Therefore, He still calls men and sends them to become “fishers of men” with the net of that Gospel (Mark 1:17).

The word “epiphany” means “manifestation” and especially emphasizes that Christ was manifest to the world as our Savior, and particularly to the non-Jewish world.

This Sunday is the first in the season of Epiphany, which lasts six more weeks until Ash Wednesday, February 22. The word “epiphany” means “manifestation” and especially emphasizes that Christ was manifest to the world as our Savior, and particularly to the non-Jewish world.

At the Baptism of Jesus, He was made manifest to the world as the One whom John the Baptist had been preparing for, namely the Messiah (The Anointed One). He was anointed then as our Prophet, Priest, and King. This is recounted in our Gospel lesson.

Jesus would go on to institute this sacred washing as a sacrament, a means by which the Holy Spirit would give and strengthen faith, wash away our sins, and impart the righteousness of Christ. Through baptizing and teaching the church carries out the benediction of Isaiah upon the Christ, that God would make Him “a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.” (Isaiah 49:6)

We see this very thing carried out in our lesson from the Acts of the Apostles, where in the city of Philippi the jailor and his whole household were taught and baptized and came to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. To this day, God continues to work through the gospel and through the sacrament of Holy Baptism to give and strengthen faith, so that His kingdom comes and His will is done to the salvation of men, women, and children.

When we use words like “love,” people often have a warm feeling. When we picture Mary and Joseph in the stable with Jesus in the manger, we likewise have a warm feeling about this idyllic scene. In many ways this is true. A Child is born. There perils of Mary giving birth are over. The comfort and encouragement of the shepherds and their report of what the angel said were surely welcome to both Mary and Joseph.

We are now on the eighth day of Christmas. On that eighth day Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem, to the temple, and there he was circumcised. In a way this is a reality check for us.

The blood of Jesus was shed for the first time.

It showed that He was born as one of us to live under the law so that He could redeem us who live under the law.

It emphasizes the fact that He is true man, and that as such He came to suffer what we suffer and to die our death – the death of sinners.

With the circumcision of Christ we are reminded that His State of Humiliation has begun. With the giving of His NAME as Jesus He is declared to all to be our SAVIOR – with all that means. To be our savior cost Him the cross and the wrath of God, and has given us the gift of life and salvation.

It’s all in the name!

The Advent wreath is a contribution of the German and Scandinavian traditions. It developed out of the simple use of an evergreen spray of fir, spruce, balsam, or pine placed near the hearth. The wreath is plain, without any ornamentation of ribbon or bow. The evergreen of the wreath represents the life that is found in Christ. The greens have come from the out-of-doors where nature has begun its winter sleep. Midst the drabness of nature the evergreen branch symbolizes the continuation of life. In the home it is placed on a central table. In the church it is usually suspended above the altar or set on a pedestal resting on the floor.

The Advent candles are arranged with the spray. Candles have been used for centuries as the symbol of light. The light reminds us of Christ, the light of the world, so it is not at all strange that the Christian church has given the candle a prominent place in the observance of Advent.

It is the living light, the living flame that gives the candle its meaning, for the gospel light of Christ is itself a living power. This is what makes it more symbolic than artificial lights.

Jesus is the light that broke forth on the world on that first Christmas when he was born as Prince of Peace. He is the light that gradually penetrated into all the world. The traditional act of lighting one more candle each week–or each day–tells of the increasingly brighter light of his coming, and leads gradually to the blaze of light at the dawning of Christmas.

Here is a listing of prophecies to be read during the four Sundays of Advent:
1st Sunday in Advent – Jeremiah 33:14-16; Isaiah 9:1-2
Christ the Branch of Righteousness is promised.
The Prophecy Candle honors those who spoke His promises

2nd Sunday in Advent – Micah 4:1-7, 5:2
Christ will establish His Kingdom of Grace.
The Bethlehem Candle symbolizes the preparations made for Him.

3rd Sunday in Advent – Malachi 3:1-6; Luke 2:20
Christ shall purify His people.
The Shepherds’ Candle honors the first to spread the good news.

4th Sunday in Advent – Isaiah 40:1-8; Luke 2:13-14
Christ shall comfort His people.
The Angels’ Candle celebrates the joy of God’s grace to mankind.
